[Mk2] [Generic] Anyone using a deep dish steering wheel?

Post by Bear87 »

Has anyone had any experience with a deep dish steering wheel in a sw20?
Im only asking as the wheel that came with my car is the most crappy ricer type thing i have ever seen. Im not a fan of the toyota whell (personal preference) but i like the thick suede covered type. I know they dont always last well but for what they cost for a fake ebay special im happy to change it every year or so.

My questions are

Does it take anything away in the driving experience?
Is it comfortable? I.e is it too close to you in regard to pedels?
Does it actually look okay fitted?
Can you still easily access wiper and indicator stalks?

Cheers guys

I bought a kobe one at japfest a few weeks ago.

Its not really dished but has a dish on it. Also it is a bit of a reach for the stalks but its not a big problem - just need to get used to it.

Sorry the pic doesnt show the dish very well but its the only one i got for now and its peeing down outside!

I have a Nardi 350mm. It was strange at first but 3 years later all is good
This is an old picture, my cabin has changed since but you get an idea.

I love a nardi wheel :thumleft:

Out of intrest guys does anyone know how deep there wheels are? The one i like is 90mm which seems alot. I assume the boss makes a big difference? I have what i would say is a standard type boss but i assume shorter ones are an option?

Mine is a Momo MC7728 boss, OMP Corsica 350mm. Specs for both will probably be on their respective websites :thumleft:

If u got a mig then its easy. The mr2 rails come in 2 parts (lhs and rhs) so to keep them at the same distance away from each other i welded a bar between them. I then modded to fit with bolts to the recaro seat then grinded the bar off.

The height is lower than standard now and the recaros can be moved around just like an original seat.

I did try welding my own frames but this was a lot easier.

Ive had them about 3yrs and still going strong.

Thanks mark i may get the seat out on the weekend and have a look. I do have access to a mig wealder but not sure how much i trust my welding. May just tac a frame together then get the local shop to finish them up. Must work out cheaper than buying a subframe! :-k

Exact setup I have, bar mine is a 330mm and Suede with yellow stitching,
love it, along with my Corbeau fixed buckets it gives an amazing feel.
wouldn't have a flat steering wheel over this at all. oh and 90mm dish is fine,
as mentioned its a reach to the stalks, but you get used to it.

Nardi, deep corn, perforated leather, 330mm in mine. Also needed to fit a pcd adaptor for the momo boss.
Agree with the others about the stalks being a slight reach, but i much prefer the position of the wheel now :thumleft:

Am i right in thinking that you are all running some form of bucket seat? Im looking to do seats soon but wondered if the diffrent seating position makes the deep dish the better choice?

Cheers gazza means i can put the wheel in before the seats. Im stuck with the nasty blue cloth ones at the moment. They are immaculate and comfy but so damn ugly!
