Choosing tyres? Just read this tyre review.

Post by ryan »

In "Car and Driver", an American magazine, issue Dec '05.

I bought the mag because its the only review i've come across where the Toyo tyre is tested.

Braking, Autocross, Skidpad (g), Wet and Dry performance were all tested

Tyres tested and overall rankings were,

1st Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3
2nd Continental ContiSportContact2
3rd Yokohama Advan Neova AD07
4th Michelin Pilot Sport PS2
5th Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212
6th Dunlop SP Sport Maxx
7th Pirelli P Zero Rosso Asimmetrico
8th Toyo Proxes T1R
9th Bridgestone Potenza RE050A
10th BFGoodrich g-force T/A KD
11th Kumho Ecsta MX

Tests done using BMW 325i

So, Toyos may be relatively cheaper than the top class stuff, but it certainly ain't the best tyre; in the two dry tests it came last.

The names may differ slightly, being a Yank mag, but i'm sure this mag is a sister mag of Auto Express, and they usually include the test in their mag a month later?

Hope this helps in you tyre selection
Ryan :D

I have a vague recollection that some (though not necessarily all) US tyres are different compounds to their UK equivalent - though that might not be true any longer.

Anyway - I wouldn't disagree with them entirely, I don't think the Toyo's do have the most outright grip.. For me, S-03's had more, but were far more 'snappy' and gave a lot less warning when they went - and with me not being Scumacher, I need warning

I notice F1s came top - don't they destroy themselves if you take them on track?

Neovas are meant to be fantastic, though - progressive *and* hugely grippy.

Your folly mr Nankang, I think the opinions of owners club members have limited use when they may only have tried two or three brands. Also variables like wrong tyre wall/width for size of rim, different suspension set up etc and bias come into play.
I'd rather use scientific data from specialised equipement that is correct and very accurate. [-X

I had already gathered that the F1 '3s' were one of the best (a big improvement over the 2s) so I think that'll be my next 'upgrade', esp as it'll help when putting power/torque down 8)

I've got a set of Lotus Elise Spec S1 Advan Neovas (AD06) on the Roadster, and have to say I've been very impressed with them. Very very nicely progressive, grip well in the wet and dry and seem to last very well on the roadster - I've done 10k miles on them, including a few days at the Nurburgring and they've only worn 2-3mm all around. A set aren't cheap though (!)

You can only get them in 195/50R15 and 225/45R16 sizes which is the only drawback at the moment, but Yokohama may make other Advan tyres available in the UK ...

I like my SO3's. Found them better then the F1's I had on the rear before. Great in the wet too. Apparently they have ceased now though :(

I'd be interested to see the Pirelli P Zero Nero's tested. Apparently they are a good tyre.

I'd generally agree... Toyo's are cheap budget tyres. And may well represent good value for money.. this is why people buy them and recommend them. For sure there are far better tyres out there.

The compounds probably are different in the US.

Sorry but that is rubbish... so the more power you have the more your opinion is valued when it comes to opinions on tyres?? are you sure about that?

I wouldn't put it quite like that - "cheap budget tyres" implies cheap remoulds to me, Nankangs or some other set of TDFs..

Toyo's are cheap(er) performance tyres - outright grip isn't as big as other brands, but at least you get progressiveness (but they're hardly 'cheap' compared to a set of 'no-name' remoulds at £15 a corner ;))

If money was no object I'd probably buy Neovas - despite them not coming top in that test table, they are at least still progressive (I'd rather not have tyres that are grip-grip-grip-grip-ditch ;))

Neovas are fantastic... much, much better than F1s... though the ones i'm talking about are LTS Neovas (which are specific in compound to the elise S1).

Toyo's IMO are cheap budget tyres.

Nankang and no name stuff are TDF's IMO (Taiwanese Ditch Finders).

I use A539s on my car and i think they are cheap budget tyres tbh.

surely opinions should be more down to peoples' experience and what they do with their cars?
