[Mk2] [Turbo] What is the best gearbox to use for high power?

Post by bobhatton »

I need to get a rebuilt gearbox with LSD and taller diff gears.
I understand the REV 2 and 3 are the best to use.
What is wrong with the REV 1 box and are the 2 and 3 the same?
What are the part numbers for the taller diff gears and what was the model and year of car they come from?

Thanks

iirc final drive from a st165 celica will give you a higher top speed.

Right, thanks.
And that gear set will fit in any box?

Thanks,
that is what I understand, but is that all? Can the later syncos be fitted into a REV 1 box?
Are the diffs all the same? I have a TRD LSD for a REV 1 I was told but will it fit in a REV 2?

Thanks

We sell the final drive package - check our affiliates section.

Rev 1 boxes had single synchros and weak selector forks that were prone to bending.

Rev 2 onwards had dual synchros and uprated forks. Also, they were LSD as standard.

Thanks Nathan.

So ALL Rev 2 have LSD fitted?
Is there anyway of telling from the outside if an LSD is fitted?

Thanks

All REV3 boxes have LSD it was still an option on REV2 cars.

Best way to check is take a drivshaft out and look in the hole if it has a hex bar running through the hole then it has a LSD.

We have just changed a Rev2 box with a hex bar through the hole for a Rev 3 box with LSD. Now the wheels do not spin in 2nd up but before with the old box one wheel would spin, but from what you said the old box had an LSD too.
Its a bit of a problem to know when an LSD is fitted and working or not.

Thanks

if it has a bar through the middle of the output shaft then it has factory viscous LSD.

from what i have come to understand from many LSD posts over many mr2 forums, you will not know whether you have an oem lsd or not from driving the car or spinning the wheels -you have to physically look for that bar in the shaft. the 'spin the wheel' technique wont work due to the lsd being viscous coupling -we could not put enough torque through the transmission by hand to activate the mechanism.

...or if you do a full bore launch (on a private closed road obviously) and leave 11s, then you have a diff
I think anyway...
