LSD and MOT?

Post by BLZ-8027 »

I read to be careful when having the MOT done ,if your car has a Limited Slip Diff ,when the brake test is done on the rollers
http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_370.htm

What confuses me is ,How do you go on when going on a rolling road?
And it seems a lot of people are not sure whether their car has a LSD or not so what happens when they have an MOT done ?
How does the tester know ?

Im curious because my MOT is happening soon \:D/

Even if you only suspect that you have an LSD do not have the car checked on the brake rollers. The MOT test center have to take the car on a road test with a device which measures braking efficiency (can't remember its name).

A rolling road is different in that the drive is going the "right" way through the diff. A brake roller does it the opposite way and that's where the damage can occur.

Viscous coupled LSDs are fine for the normal MOT brake test.

Aftermarket plate type LSDs must be done on the road.

Really?

I've always been under the impression that any LSD having drive passed through it the wrong way stands the chance of being damaged... :-k

I always had to get my 2 done on the road as it was too low for the rollers.

Mine is road tested as per my mechanic. That's what he says should happen. Mustn't be tested on rollers.

ah ffs, how would I know if its been damaged? I have an LSD and it was tested on the testing machine / rollers about 8-9 months ago. Its a non standard LSD, GTSChris thinks its aftermarket but not 100% sure on what brand. :(
