[Mk2] [Turbo] ATS TD06 with Jun/KU [email protected] dyno

Post by Kongaroo »

The last month or two I have been slowly learning how to use the datalogit to map the PowerFC in my car. I was originally going to just do a rough map under boost to last me for a little while before I went to get it professionally mapped but then over time and regular tweaking I ended up just doing the whole thing myself, lol.

Anyway this is a little follow up to the last map I had which was done at Perfect Touch: http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... z+ecu+dyno

This new map is basically a modified version of the standard base map that comes stored in the PowerFC itself.

I only hired the dyno for 1 hour to test and adjust the map, which I had mostly created using 2nd and 3rd gear on the street (4th gear at high RPMs will quickly get you a driving ban with all the speed cameras vans we have secreted away over here  )

Two of the runs are shown below which are in 3rd gear. I did do a final run in 4th but for some reason - operator said it was due to intereference with the rollers - my 4th gear run did not register properly and by then my timeslot was pretty much over with.

In any case I was pretty happy with the results especially as this was my first attempt at mapping. Car got approx. 327WHP on the best run at 18.3PSI.

There was no obvious knock on the detcans according to the dyno operator. There was some misfire on one of those 2 runs which you can literally see as a dip inpower and torque at high RPMs - that run only registered 320WHP.

The inital runs were pretty horrible with several misfires going on throughout the rev range so as you can imagine I got a bit of a sinking feeling initially, lol. However most of the misfires disappeared when I adjusted the onset of the alcohol injection and the ignition advance, save for one persistent one that always occured between 5-6K RPMs.

However I seem to recall I had this problem on the previous map also so it may be time to try changing my ignition leads to see if that's the cause of the misfire (they are the same ones that came with the car when I bought it 3 years ago).

Main differences in mods between this time and last time: Forged pistons+rods, Jun/KU manifold (doesn't actually look as nicely finished as the KU ones so might actually be an authentic one? Lol), 800cc injectors. The water injection fluid also changed from screenwash that contained upto 40% alcohol content to 50/50 mix of distilled water+methanol (I'd read that additives in some screenwash mixtures could be harmful to the engine).

It's interesting to note that with the upgraded intake manifold the torque now holds well even upto 7800RPM. Whereas before when I running the standard manifold the torque dropped sharply after 6500RPMs so it would appear to be doing its job.

Next step will be to get my GSC cams installed and maybe turn up the boost a little more :thumleft:

nice results esp since you mapped it yourself  That's 90whp more than mine with just an ebc lol Must be nice on the road

Thanks for the kind words guys - I'm just happy that the manifold really does show some benefit in the top end (and that I didn't destroy my engine :eye: )

A couple of interesting bits:

You can use a device like a G-tech or Blitz Power ID to record the changes in performance during road tuning - they are actually accurate enough to measure even relatively small increases in boost (assuming the car is actually accelerating faster for the given increase in boost)

I decided to use the dyno as a chance to test the accuracy of the results I'd been getting on the road - primarily with my Blitz Power ID which calculates your approximate WHP from knowing the rate of acceleration and the weight of the car - it does this by knowing the speed of the car by being wired into to the relevant car wire for speed.

I think this is perhaps a slightly more accurate than the way the G-tech does it which is by measuring the acceleration using accelerometers. The other advantage the Blitz has over the G-tech is the fact that a power run recording can be started while the car is already moving whilst the G-tech requires you to do a stationary start to give the accelerometers a chance to zero.

According to the G-tech website you can approximately calculate the aero drag loss (this is power loss which you don't get on a dyno because the car is stationary and moving the rollers instead) using this formula:

HP loss due to aero drag =

Cd * A * (V * V * V)
-------------------------
150,000

where:

Cd = drag Coefficient
A = frontal area in sq. ft.
V = Velocity (speed) in MPH

The frontal area of an MR2 according to what I could find from searching on the net is approx. 18.8sq. feet which seems about right when you take a tape measure to it. Cd is 0.31 for a mk2.

So at 94MPH if you do the math you get a figure of 32.2HP lost due to aero drag.

Now here's the good bit - doing a power run using my current map from 4000RPM to 7000RPM (which is 94MPH on my tyre setup - private road/dragstrip required for this... don't speed on public roads etc.) while recording the run on the Blitz Power ID gave me an average of 290 WHP over a number of tries.

Add the calculated aero drag loss of 32.2 to 290 and you get 322.2WHP which is pretty damn close to the measured WHP from the dastek dyno - so I think used in the right way they can be a nice way to approximate your power output :D

did the manifold increase turbo lag by much or not ? cause i have the manifold sitting waiting to go on and im running td05

Good point as most upgraded intake manifolds seem to work in a similar way to upgrading cams - ie. better top end but increased lag.

To be fair I don't think there was much increase in lag - if so its probably about 200 RPMs at most. Remember these 2 runs were done in 3rd gear so if done in 4th like the older runs in the link we would likely see the torque hit 200 lbft slightly earlier than it does in these 2 runs.

Plus look at the amount of extra area under the torque curve from 6500+ RPMs compared to the older dyno run in the link - would seem like a decent modification :thumleft:

In terms of performance I've only really done a few 0-60 tests using my G-tech. No difference really from before in that respect with the G-tech still registering times typically in the 4.1 to 4.5s bracket with a half decent launch. Car is certainly capable of a better 0-60 time than that with a better launch/60ft time :D

any reason why one day dastek had you looses 20ish through the transmission and the next losing 60???

sweet results, must feel cool mapping your own car.

That's got me puzzled too - that figure was calculated using coast down by the dyno operator so is not something that could be affected by me at all (I was in the passenger seat with my laptop  )

The only thing I can think of is that when I did my runs this time it was done in 3rd gear rather than 4th. I've actually e-mailed Dastek for some more information on how it is calculated.

This is why I've stuck to comparing the WHP figures only which are the measured figures rather than the calculated ones.
